Getting to Know Amy Schumer

By Jessi Stickel on July 15, 2015

Amy Schumer was born in Manhattan, New York, along with her younger sister Kimberly. Growing up, her parents were successful business owners with their baby furniture store. When Amy was 9 years old her father was diagnosed with a disease called multiple sclerosis. At the age of 12 Amy’s parents filed for a divorce and Amy moved with her mother to Long Island, New York.

After Schumer graduated high school she went off  to college at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland. There she earned her Bachelor’s degree in theater. She then moved back to New York City in 2003 to pursue her career as a comedian.

Amy soon got small rolls in movies and television shows like “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” (2012) and “Last Comic Standing” (2011). In 2011, Schumer started to get noticed when she appeared on her first Comedy Central Roast (of Charlie Sheen). On this particular roast Schumer got a lot of heat from one of her jokes to “Jackass” star Steve-O. “Jackass’s” Ryan Dunn just passed away before the filming of the roast; however, Schumer joked that everyone wished Steve-O was the one who died.

Even though the new comedian wasn’t getting the best feedback from her insensitive humor Comedy Central wanted to keep her around. The next year she was brought back as a comedian to “roast” Roseanne Barr. Her stand-up comedy special “Mostly Sex Stuff” made it to television in late 2012 also on Comedy Central.

Soon after her standup special got great reviews Comedy Central offered Amy her own television comedy show “Inside Amy Schumer” that premiered in early 2013. The hour comedy has been picked up for four seasons. The third season premiered in April earlier this year.

2015 has already been an extremely successful year for Schumer. Earlier this year she hosted the MTV Movie Awards, got awarded with a Critics’ Choice TV Award for “Inside Amy Schumer,” was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, and was featured on the cover of Entertainment Weekly Magazine.

Schumer was also presented with an opportunity to replace Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show;” although she was so honored she cried, she turned the offer down because she did not feel like it was the right job for her personally. She was also asked by Madonna to be an opening act for three of her concerts in New York later this year.

Recently, Amy Schumer has been very popular in the media for her honesty and self-confidence. After her hilarious, but touching Glamour Women of the year acceptance speech last month, she did a cover story for Glamour magazine talking about her personal views on men and women. Schumer expressed to Glamour:

“For women, we’re taught to eat less until we disappear. And trained to believe that if you don’t look like everyone else, then you’re unlovable. Men are not trained that way. Men can look like whatever and still date a supermodel. I’m proud of what I said. I think it’s good to see somebody saying: I have a belly. And I have cellulite. And I still deserve love.”

She later explained why she said all of these things: “I want to make women laugh. I want them to feel beautiful in their own skin. I wanted to empower them to use their voice and not apologize. And I want a jet.”

To hear Amy express her feelings about this sensitive issue in today’s society is so refreshingly honest. I think any woman, whether you are 8 or 88, can look up to Amy Schumer and be confident about themselves no matter what society is forcing all of us to believe.

Earlier this June Schumer went on the Howard Stern radio show and opened up to him. He asked about her situation where she fell on the red carpet right in front of glamorous Kayne West and Kim Kardashian West. She told him that she fell on purpose, not to spite Kim and Kayne, but to make herself and other people laugh.

She did however say that before her fall  Kim and Kayne were posing and “… looking at the photographers like ‘You’re welcome’.”  Amy said she wanted to “… take the power out of the moment” by doing something hilarious, in this case, face planting on the floor.

She also dished that after her fall Kayne seemed upset about the whole deal, although she said that Kim almost took a step to help her up, but looked at Kayne and saw that wasn’t the “vibe” the couple were going to give out.

Along with finishing up her stand-up tour “Inside Amy Schumer’s Back Door,” Ms. Schumer also stars in a movie she wrote — “Trainwreck” — along with “Saturday Night Live” comedian Bill Hader. The movie was directed by the famous Judd Apatow who approached Amy with the movie deal. Apatow heard her on the Howard Stern Show, and after hearing her story and how funny she was he decided to give her a chance.

The movie is about Amy (Schumer), a woman in her 30s that isn’t too into dating, commitment or getting emotionally attached. However, she meets Aaron (Hader) and he starts to change her mind. The film hilariously shows the characters as they start to fall in love with one another. “Trainwreck” hits theaters Friday, July 17, 2015.

The comedian is also rewriting a script with her sister and also “road manager.” She told Howard Stern that if “Trainwreck” does well at the box-office, Fox may pick up her new movie as well, which she will also star in.

Amy’s old and newer fans are excited to see what she has coming next … after we rush to the theaters to see “Trainwreck” of course!
